How to Test and Verify Your Internet Connection Stability?

By

Internet connection could come in many forms. It could be wired into your house, through wireless or even using the lossless fiber optic cable. No matter how it was transferred to your house. The data speed and stability determine the user experience. In developing country like Malaysia, internet stability is a serious issue. It impacts the user experience and many complaints had been filed without solution, especially when the local communication service was monopoly by certain political party.

Here are a few suggestions to check on your internet connection and how to improve the stability at your own. When filing a complaint to the service provider, you could quote the data you have collected to better describe your situation across time.

Ping the Website

First, try to ping the website your wish to browse or your DNS. If you not sure about your DNS server, you can check with your service provider.
Go to your command prompt (in Window: Start -> Run -> cmd -> press enter), type below:

C:\ping www.abc.com –t

Or

C:\ping 202.188.0.133 -t

Replace the www.abc.com with the website you wish to browse. To stop the pinging, type Ctrl-C. You can highlight the ping result when you file a complaint to the service provider.

If you are staying in Malaysia, you can try to use of the service provider browser test website:

http://verify.tm.net.my/ then goes to Browsing Test.

Key in your url and press enter. Check on the webpage loading time.
General target, for local website (Malaysia), it should be less than 20ms. While for foreign website, it should be less than 30ms.
Record down the page loading time and report that when you file a complaint to the service provider.

How to improve the connection quality?

There are a few quick ways to improve your connection quality. When I mention the work “quick”, you shouldn’t expect this is the one and for all solution.

1. Flush the DNS. In command prompt, type

C:/ipconfig /flushdns

2. Go to your browser history and clear your cookies

3. Use open DNS. You could check on the available open DNS by going to Google and search for “open DNS”. However, do be aware that using an open DNS might expose your computer to virus or hacking if you do not have proper protection.

Or you can try out the Google DNS (http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/).

Drop me a note on your experience after you tried.

Good luck.

I have bad experience on internet connection stability lately. Thanks for sharing the steps on checking the network latency via ping request to detect any potential problems on ADSL line. At least this prompt me to contact my ISP about the broadband reliability, without procrastination. Great hub and voted up!

Great tips. This is one of ways to identify whether the connection problem is due to our ISP or user side. Regarding the open dns, you can try google open dns and google dns as well.I'm using google dns and so far, the browsing speed is better and stable. Thanks for this great article.

Since I am not a technical person in IT, I always bear with the problem or get the technical support from my service provider which sometimes put me in long queue. Now I can give a try to make data collection before filing a complaint, this will save my time. I guess. Useful hub, thanks for sharing.

Sporadic poor responses and connections can be very disruptive and show a lack of sincerity of the service provider in giving excellent service to its customers. Thus service provider must ensure good and fast connections and responses every time, however, monopoly does rob us off of good services.

Good sharing. Agree with my footprints, monopoly is definitely a huge challenge for people in country without anti-trust law.
